The dead are now silent and often forgotten. Yet they are more than mere names chiseled into stone. They were flesh and blood. They had a childhood, a family, a life. They laughed and cried. They planed and dreamed. Tombstone inscriptions are windows into the past. Old-time epitaphs and inscriptions explain much more than a person’s birth and death. They explain the values of the society in which our ancestors lived – spiritual beliefs, parental love, marital devotion, societal turmoil, devotion and sacrifice, tragedy and triumph. The author has inventoried 112 old cemeteries, burial grounds, family plots, and individual graves of European immigrants and their ancestors in McCormick County, South Carolina. He obtained verbatim transcripts of inscriptions and epitaphs on tombstones and other types of grave markers. For each grave or burial site the entire inscription text has been transcribed, not merely pertinent excerpts. This 634-page hardcover book – 8˝ x 11 inches in size – includes all inscriptions from the 112 cemeteries or burial sites. Each burial site is prefaced by a map showing the burial site location, written directions, latitude and longitude, and a burial ground plot plan. A complete index of all decedents shows the page number where each decedent’s inscription or epitaph is documented.
